Therapist and client in a warm, welcoming office setting

What to Expect at Your First Session

Starting therapy is a courageous step. We want to make sure you know exactly what to expect, so you can walk into your first session feeling prepared and at ease.

01

Schedule Your Appointment

Call us at (312) 210-0175 or email info@allenwellnesscenter.com. We'll match you with a therapist based on your needs, preferences, and availability. Most new clients are seen within one week.

02

Complete Intake Paperwork

Before your first session, we'll send you intake forms to complete online. These cover basic information, your therapy goals, and any relevant history. This helps your therapist prepare so you can make the most of your first session.

03

Your First Session

Your initial appointment is 50-60 minutes. Your therapist will create a warm, non-judgmental space to learn about you, what brought you to therapy, and what you hope to achieve. There's no pressure to share more than you're comfortable with.

04

Build Your Treatment Plan

Together with your therapist, you'll develop a personalized treatment plan. This includes your therapy goals, the approaches your therapist recommends, and a general timeline. Your plan evolves as you progress.

05

Ongoing Sessions

Most clients meet weekly or biweekly. Each session is 45-50 minutes. Over time, you'll develop new coping skills, gain deeper self-understanding, and work toward the changes that matter most to you.

Common Questions About Starting Therapy

Do I need therapy?
Almost anyone can benefit from therapy. Many of our clients come in feeling overwhelmed or stressed out because of work, interpersonal issues, family challenges, or simply managing their own thoughts or emotions. Some feel stuck and want to bring their professional or personal lives to the next level. Whatever the issue or concern, a trained therapist can help you find your way.
What if I've never been to therapy before?
That's completely okay — many of our clients are first-time therapy-goers. Your therapist will guide you through the process and answer any questions. There's no 'right' way to do therapy.
How do I know which therapist is right for me?
We're happy to help! When you call or email us, we'll ask about your concerns and preferences, then recommend therapists who are the best fit. You can also browse our team page to learn about each therapist's specialties.
What if I don't click with my therapist?
The therapeutic relationship is one of the most important factors in successful therapy. If you don't feel it's the right fit, just let us know. We'll gladly connect you with another therapist on our team — no questions asked.
Do you take insurance?
Yes, we accept most major insurance plans and we also see self-pay clients. If you have insurance questions, we'll be happy to help answer them for you.
Is what I say in therapy confidential?
Absolutely. All communication between our therapists and clients is confidential, with very limited exceptions required by law (such as imminent risk of harm). Your therapist will explain these limits during your first session.
Can I do therapy virtually?
Yes! We have four convenient locations to choose from, plus telehealth sessions for clients across Illinois. Virtual sessions use a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform and provide the same quality care as in-person visits.
How long does therapy usually take?
It varies by person and situation. Some clients find relief in 8-12 sessions, while others benefit from longer-term support. Your therapist will regularly check in about your progress and adjust the plan as needed. You're always in control of how long you continue.
What if I need to cancel or reschedule?
We ask for at least 24 hours notice for cancellations or reschedules. This allows us to offer the time slot to another client who may be waiting. Please review our cancellation policy for details.
